University of Texas senior defensive back Michael Taaffe was named the 2025 recipient of the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. In memory of his close friend Jake Ehlinger, Taaffe leads substance abuse prevention efforts through Texas Against Fentanyl, expanding education and resources statewide. His commitment to helping others doesn’t stop there. In partnership with P. Terry’s Burger Stand, Taaffe raised more than $100,000 for the Texas Flood Relief Foundation, honoring lives lost at Camp Mystic and supporting families in need. From visiting the Dell Children’s Hospital to distributing food with Welcome Table ATX and joining community cleanups with The Trail Conservancy, Taaffe regularly gives back in Austin.

“For me, it’s all about serving my community with purpose and making a meaningful difference beyond football,” Taaffe said. “I’m honored to receive this award and for everyone who supports giving back. The Wuerffel Foundation, Allstate, and AFCA, thank you for shining a light on service.”

A former walk-on from Austin’s Westlake High School, Taaffe emerged into a cornerstone of the Texas defense, appearing in 53 games with 36 career starts. During his tenure, the Longhorns posted a 43–13 record, reached consecutive College Football Playoff semifinals (2023–24), won the 2023 Big 12 title, and claimed the SEC’s best regular-season record while reaching the 2024 SEC Championship Game. Taaffe finished his career with 222 tackles, seven interceptions, 21 pass breakups, 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced turnovers.

Taaffe not only earned the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy in 2025; he also garnered AFCA First Team All-America honors and collected additional All-America recognition from the FWAA and AP, along with All-SEC Coaches’ First Team honors.

“Michael represents everything this award stands for,” Wuerffel said. “His courage and commitment to help others reflect his remarkable servant leadership. As he joins the fraternity of twenty previous recipients of this award, we congratulate him on this prestigious honor.”

Taaffe was selected 158th overall in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.
