A Perfect Match – Herff Jones and the Wuerffel Trophy

By: Sarah McDonald, Herff Jones

Since 2006, Herff Jones has had the honor of sponsoring and supporting the Wuerffel Trophy.

This award is one of the most prestigious of all college football awards, and reflects one of the greatest football players of all time – Danny Wuerffel. Commonly known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” the Wuerffel Trophy honors players who best combine exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

There are many life lessons that athletes learn throughout their college career. A few of the more important lessons are time management and work ethic. If we’re being honest, being a collegiate athlete is like having a full-time job while taking on a full course load at school. Not only do you have to be disciplined and work hard on the field, you must maintain a certain GPA to stay eligible. Beyond that feat in and of itself are the athletes whose excellence extends to all aspects of their life – not just athletics and academics. They are an extraordinary athlete, student, brother, son, teammate and humanitarian.

Each year a new recipient is added to the small family of winners and the award presentation is nothing short of spectacular. These special men hold their faith and family in higher regard than athletics and careers, and are an inspiration to those who desire to be excellent in all aspects of their life. With true class and respect, the previous winners show up each year to offer their congratulations and support to the newest member of their family.

This year, we are proud to welcome Texas A&M University quarterback, Trevor Knight to this unique family of exceptional men. Among his tremendous athletic accomplishments, Knight was a key driving force in setting up a mission trip to Haiti at A&M and was actively involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and local churches. Knight transferred to A&M after spending four years with Oklahoma, and helped lead the Sooners to a 2014 Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama.

The relationship with the Wuerffel Trophy is a perfect match for Herff Jones – as we are privileged to be associated with an organization that truly represents what is great about our young people, our colleges, and our country.
